Rectify: Jacob’s Ladder

Rectify:  What does it mean when I randomly cry during an episode of television even though there is no explicit trigger for the emotion on-screen? Does it mean I need a therapist? OK, maybe. But what I choose to believe is that this is a television show that is so deep, so rich, that it taps into feelings we don’t even want to admit to ourself that we have. I am not a betting man, but I would bet that this show is going to get some serious attention come Golden Globes time, possibly even Emmy time. It’s just so… rich.

This season finale didn’t so much wrap things up as it did perpetuate the situation. We got to listen to the recordings of Daniel’s interrogation and we also heard from his own mouth as he talked to Amnatha how good it felt to admit that he had killed his girlfriend all those years ago. I don’t want to believe he actually did it, but how could I not suspect? I’m pretty sure the two dudes in the woods, one with bullet in head and one without, had a lot more to do with the murder than Daniel did, but how will anyone know the truth? No one wants to know. Senator Faulks wants to press ahead on the prosecution. Ted Jr. has every reason to believe Daniel is dangerous. (Although I really want to believe that Daniel did nothing more than place the coffee… what a power play.) Luckily the current prosecutor is good at her job and wants to ensure she actually has a case and not just misplaced emotion. Speaking of misplaced emotion, the victim’s brother and his gang sure worked out their issue with Daniel, huh? People can do stupid things.

This show is so good! Ahhhhh! I can’t even really express in words how good it is. Was the finale perfect? I wouldn’t go that far. But I also wasn’t that interested in Breaking Bad after the first short season. ANd that show turned out great. This show is from some of the same producers, so I have no reason to doubt that they know exactly what to do to continue elevating this show to greatness. And let me be clear. Rectify‘s first season is a lot stronger than Breaking Bad‘s first season was. A lot stronger.

Listen, there’s nothing else to talk about. Either you believe me that this show is worth your attention (which it is) and you give it a shot, or you’re already watching and you understand that this show is tapping into something that a story hasn’t found in quite some time, if ever. Every actor on this show is smashing it. The pacing and structure is almost designed to make you interested without understanding what it is you’re even getting emotional about. This is the real deal TV fans. You have plenty of time between now and the start of Season Two. Get on board. Let yourself be part of the experience, not just an archaeologist sifting through the stories of times past. I honestly don’t think you’ll regret it.  –  A
